The structure of Bashkir State Medical University (BSMU)

The mission of Belgorod State University (BelSU) is to address research challenges of both international and national importance while integrating education, research, social, and cultural activities. The university is committed to training highly qualified professionals who can enhance the global competitiveness of Russia and the Belgorod region, while also preserving and advancing the country’s and region’s cultural and moral heritage.

BelSU holds a strong position in international and national rankings. According to the SCimago Institutions Rankings (Global Higher Education), the university is ranked 768th worldwide and 34th in the Russian Federation. In the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, BelSU secured the 1844th position globally and 22nd among Russian universities.

In subject-based rankings compiled by the analytical center EXPERT University Ranking, BelSU has demonstrated high academic productivity across multiple disciplines. It ranked 13th–14th in Materials Science, 4th–5th in Metallurgy, 11th–13th in Engineering, 19th–21st in Humanities, 29th in Social Sciences, and 29th in Biological Chemistry within the Biosciences category. The Russian education system is largely based on the Central European model

The Russian education system is largely based on the Central European model and is similar in overall structure, though it has some distinct features. It is divided into four main stages: primary, secondary, higher, and postgraduate education. Secondary education in Russia lasts 11 years, unlike the 12-year system followed in many countries. Education from Year 1 to Year 9 is compulsory. After completing Year 9, students receive a Certificate of Basic General Education and can choose different pathways. They may continue for two additional years of secondary schooling to earn a Certificate of Complete Secondary Education, which qualifies them for higher education, or they may opt to pursue a three-year associate or vocational program at a college or trades school, which typically leads directly to employment.
There are three main types of higher education institutions in Russia: Universities, Academies, and Institutes. Universities offer a wide range of programs across all levels of education, from undergraduate to postgraduate studies. Academies also provide higher education at all levels but are usually specialized in a particular field, such as science, art, architecture, or medicine, and are heavily focused on research. Institutes typically function as independent units or branches of universities or academies and mainly offer professional and specialized education programs.

Russia has one of the highest numbers of university graduates in Europe, largely because during the Soviet era the government fully financed education, including higher education and even students’ living expenses. Today, Russia has around 519 higher education institutions and 48 universities. Historically, the country has placed strong emphasis on science and technology, and many government-run institutions are highly specialized in these areas, which is where Russian higher education enjoys its strongest global reputation. Alongside these traditional public institutions, a growing number of private higher education institutions have emerged, particularly in fields that were not traditionally emphasized, such as economics, business, and law.
